Inspiration & Resources

When I walk into someone's house for the first time,
I check out their books.
These resources are not only for your enjoyment
but, likewise, a way of getting to know me.

How do these resources pertain to Spirituality?
I believe that what moves us
connects us to a live chord inside us...
which connects us to Spirit.

Our purpose is to see the world
                                   through our divinity.

Poetry

Why have I listed poetry? In days past, we would say that the poets listed to their Muse.
Now I believe that poets are listening to Spirit or the creative Spirit Guides.

Learning
..."I can't learn even how to enter/what awaits me every year."
by William Stafford

Found in a Storm
..."meanings in search of a world."
by Wiiliam Stafford

A Ritual to Read to Each Other

by Brooks Kolb

I Am What I Am
lyrics by Gloria Gaynor

Books

I read many Esoteric and Spiritual books in the 1980's, the best I have listed below.
By the 1990's, I wanted to grasp how Divinity manifest all over the world.
In the 1990's, I was voraciously reading about world cultures and the history of Everywhere
as I continued to put the puzzle pieces together.
By 2000, I began to apply what I had learned outwardly and put my knowledge into action.

If you click on a title below, it is a hot link to Powell's Books where you can buy the book.

Global Brain:
Speculations on the Evolutionary Leap to Planetary Consciousness
Peter Russell          (his site)
This is one of the most dog-eared books in my collection. Written in 1982, years before computers and the internet had taken off, Peter Russell posited that computers would create an interconnectedness for humanity; that humanity serves as Planet Earth's nervous system.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe
Jane Wagner
One of the funniest and most insightful perspectives of us humanoids.

The Other Way to Listen
by Byrd Baylor and Peter Parnall
With beautiful illustrations, written for children and adults alike,
this is one of the  most articulate descriptions of how to listen to Spirit.

A Course in Miracles
A Foundation for Inner Peace
An important psycho-spiritual workbook to help shift attitudes and beliefs; to reprioritize your life towards love rather than fear.  Gerald Jampolsky drew from ACIM for his book "Love Is Letting Go of Fear."

 Pathfinders
by Gail Sheehy
Sheehy asked in a wide variety of communities, "Who are the most important people here?" They could be Girl Scout Leaders or corporate executives. After interviewing the most valued community members, she distilled what all these life purpose driven people had in common. Fascinating findings.

Passages
by Gail Sheehy
This book broke new ground regarding how we navigate life changes. Whether divorce or break-up; a death in the family or your own health crisis; retirement, graduation or a mid-life crisis...how we respond to life transitions
shapes our spiritual journey. You change your life or life changes you?

The Devil Problem
Life Stories: Profiles from the New Yorker
both by David Remnick
I learn alot from reading other people's life stories.

Pass It On: Five Stories that Can Change the World
by Joanna Macy
Respected Buddhist author also looks at life stories & changing the world.

An Autobiography: The Story of my Experiments with Truth
by Mohandas K Gandhi
A shining example of someone who honed his Spiritual Ideal on a daily basis.

Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069
Neil Howe and William Strauss
A fascinating historical study that sheds light on the events, behavior and attitudes of each generation. Read about Boomers, Civics, Millennials et al.

Millennials Rising: the Next Great Generation
Neil Howe and William Strauss
By the same authors as Generations, Howe and Strauss predict that those born between 1982-1998 will emerge as upbeat, optimistic and engaged.

Think and Grow Rich
by Napoleon Hill
Andrew Carnegie charged Napoleon Hill to interview all the rags-to-riches millionaires at the turn of the century in America and write how they did it and what they had in common. This is a fascinating book about how to build the attitudes that create prosperity. Often when I speak in Africa, Africans say to me, "Oh, you are from America; everyone in America has money." I respond, "The most important thing about America is not about having money but about making money." I explain that many people came to America with only the shirt on their back and built their life from there.

Creative Visualization
Shakti Gawain
Gawain teaches: what you hold in your mind’s eye impacts your actions and what manifests. Change brain change life.

The Laws of Manifestation
by David Spangler
David was the first author that I read who talked about the coming of a New Age; one of the first that talked of a spirituality that transcends religion.

The Game of Life and How to Play It
by Florence Scovell Shinn
Like David's book on manifestation, The Game of Life opening me to a fresher and deeper way of seeing how I create my own reality.

Voluntary Simplicity:
Toward a Way of Life that is Outwardly Simple, Inwardly Rich

by Duane Elgin

Autobiography of a Yogi
by Paramahansa Yogananda
Still a classic on kriya yoga and meditation.

Gods, Sages & Kings: Vedic Secrets of Ancient Civilizations
by David Frawley
One of the most readable scholars on Hinduism, the Vedas and Ayerveda.

The Great Initiates: A Study of the Secret History of Religions
by Edouard Schure
The Great Initiates, a metaphysical classic, reflects the quest for the spirit. It describes the lives and deeds of Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, Jesus. The excitement which breathes through The Great Initiates explains its continuing popularity after over a century.

Mundane Astrology:
An Introduction to the Astrology of Nations and Groups
by Michael Baigent et al
I am fascinated about where humanity is heading. This gave a few clues.

A Short History of the Future

by W. Warren Wager
Of the many futurists that I have read, Warren's books are the most beautifully written.  After reading many scholarly futurists, I began to think that Edgar Cayce might have a better grasp.

Relating: Living with Others on a Small Planet
by Liz Greene

Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil
by Liz Greene
For me, Liz Greene's books were very helpful because she is both learned and practical. She helped in bridging the symbolism of astrology to applying it to the events of a person's life.

Astrology, Karma & Transformation
by Steven Arroyo

Astrology and your Past Lives
by Jeanne Avery

Many Lives, Many Masters

by Brian Weiss MD
Do you believe in reincarnation and past lives?  Dr Weiss was a conventional psychiatrist who was doing hypnosis. "...you will recall a time when...." He was blown over when people were recalling past lives!

Healing Words: The Power of Prayer and the Practice of Medicine
by Larry Dorsey MD
Like Weiss, Dorsey started as a skeptic and dramatically changed his views.

Atlantis: The Antediluvian World
by Ignatius Donnelly
I started with the question "What is it that the Aztecs, the Incas and the Egyptians have in common because they both built pyramids." Donnelly does an impressive job of answering my question. Donnelly was a Senator in the USA at the time of Abraham Lincoln.

The Breast of the Earth:
A Survey of the History, Culture & Literature of Africa South of the Sahara
by Kofi Awoonor
This is a classic. (At this time there are no copies at Powell's Bookstore.)
Most African cultures communicate with "the ancestors." Dance, music and masks were all part of the rituals to connect with the ancestors.  Finally more people in the West are experiencing and thus believing that it is possible to communicate with those that have "passed over."

Ambiguous Adventure

by Cheikh Hamidou Kane
This is the book that I still remember from African History class.
Kane moved from Senegal to France and has insightful comments on culture.

The Mind of South Africa
by
Allister Sparks
South Africa was the first country in Africa that I longed to go to.
This was the most helpful book that I read. More importantly, Sparks sees his nation as I do: like a living entity whose historical experience shapes its behavior and interactions

Listening: How to Increase Awareness of your Inner Guide
Lee Coit
Simple but not woo-woo. Helpful guide about how to listen to your Self.

Personal Village: How to Have People in your Life by Choice not Chance

Often people come to coaching to rebalance their life. Thomas eloquently emphasizes the importance of friendships and community.
